October's EmailDear Friends,We're wondering, do we own all these musical instruments we have or do they own us? Linda's been saying for years that we have too many and should sell some. Robin, who used to disagree with her, has finally put an end to his recalcitrance and now concurs. So, every once in a while, he'll get a guitar out of its case and start playing it around the house. After a bit Linda will pick the instrument up and hear what an excellent sound it has and say, "We can't sell this?" But we've finally put Linda's gorgeous, quilted maple Taylor, 615 guitar on CraigsList. We bought it in 1992 in the middle of a coast to coast tour with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Linda played it on stage and in the studio for years. Robin has been playing for the last ten days and, yes, for a week we said, "We can't sell this guitar." But something this nice should be used and not live in a case in a closet. We'll be sad to see it go. The up side is we get to feel better about ourselves knowing that we have one guitar that doesn't own us. Many of you know of Tom Paxton, the iconic songwriter. Like so many others, we grew up singing his songs "The Last Thing On My Mind" and "Ramblin' Boy" and others. So when we got to open a show for him in the early '80s, it was a huge event for us. After our set he came up to us and said, "Not only are you good, but you're honest. And not only are you honest, but you're good." Linda's immediate response was, "Can we quote you on that?" And we used that quote in our publicity package for years. We've done many shows with him since, we've recorded one of his songs, and we recorded with him on one of his CDs. Now, at the age of 77, Tom is retiring and he's asked us to be with him at the last show of his career at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA on November 14. We look forward to being with him, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, Janis Ian, Jim Rooney, Dave Pomeroy and Pat McInerney for what will undoubtedly be a memorable show. If you're close, try and come by. We have news concerning another of our musical heroes. We've been asked to contribute to a compilation CD for Rosalie Sorrells. We've known Rosalie since our early days and remember in the early '70s listening to her record, "Travelin' Lady" until the grooves were worn. It never crossed our minds back then that we might one day become friends We'll have the pleasure of recording her song, "Borderline Heart," and we'll keep you posted on the progress of the CD. Bumper Sticker Of The Month: Every time I'm on a trip, I wish I were home. Every time I'm home, I wish I were on a trip. Did you know that the term "selling like hotcakes" developed in the 1800s when pancakes became a novelty food item at outdoor venues and fairs? We didn't, but we do now! And, speaking of which, we expect the tickets for the "Music That Matters" benefit for the Wilson Workforce Rehabilitation Foundation to start moving fast. We mentioned this in our last newsletter and the information is listed below. So, step right up and get your tickets. Don't be bitterly disappointed. Our hearts and thoughts are wrapped around those involved in yet another school shooting rampage. We are again saddened by such news and grieve along with the families and university communities, public schools and churches where this ongoing problem continues to plague our country and its innocent victims. We hope this finds you well and busy. Go out and see some live music soon!
Your pals,
