The couple calls "Turn Toward Tomorrow" the culmination of their 20-year musical partnership. And like any good marriage, it features distinct individual voices that blend to form a wholly unique persona. Beautiful harmonies, sterling musicianship and crystal ine production values all serve the greater glory that is this sparkling collection.
Just as Nashville--finally--is turning a friendlier ear to more traditional sounds, so the Wil liamses are employing a more "commercial" country sound on a handful of these tunes. "The Other Side of Town," which sounds like some kind of economics lesson un til the final verse reveals it to be a spiritual sentiment (the clues were there all along); "Chain of Pain," a typical bit of country wordplay; and "A Tender Heart and Calloused Hands" all would play nicely on mainstream radio.
But they haven't forgotten their folk/traditional fans, and there is plenty of banjo, mando and steel pedal to go around.
Coinciding with Friday's official release of the album, the Williamses appear that evening at the Cedar Cultural Centre on Minneapolis' West Bank. |
